The Centre of Rheumatology for Joint diseases is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of all patients with disease of the joints and other immunological diseases. These diseases are caused when the body’s immune system attacks itself – known as Systemic Autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases. Rheumatologic diseases usually affect the joints, muscles, nerves and bones causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and deformity.
They are a range of conditions and include, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis (arthritis in patients with the skin disease Psoriasis), ankylosing spondylitis (inflammatory spine disease), fibromyalgia, connective tissue diseases like systemic lupus erythematosus, sjogrens syndrome, mixed connective tissue disease and scleroderma, rare diseases such as relapsing polychondritis and multicentric reticulohistiocytosis. Then there are a host of conditions like vasculitis involving large , medium and small blood vessels, anti phospholipid syndrome and myopathies. Osteoporosis is a disease, where the bone becomes thin and lead to fracture. Paediatric rheumatology deals with immunological diseases involving paediatric population.
We offer consultative and continuing care for patients with regional musculoskeletal disorders such as shoulder pain, hip pain, and knee pain. We are skilled in differentiating various causes of pain including those commonly arising from musculo skeletal system and nervous system. For example, some nerve pains feel like joint pains, and vice versa and it is important to know which is which, as the treatment and outcome can be quite different. Preoperative evaluation and recommendations for patients considering joint replacement and arthritis-related reconstructive surgeries are also provided.
We are specialized in the diagnosis and management of the all the above mentioned conditions and soft tissue rheumatism like carpal tunnel syndrome, various tendinopathies, tenosynovitis and enthesitis. Besides using Disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), we have extensive expertise in administering Biologicals (immunotherapautic agents), many of which are coming as infusions and subcutaneous injections. These drugs are so potent that they will lead to significantly better outcomes in arthritis.
Note: we also give several other immunological agents depending on the clinical necessity
2.Outpatient specialty care for patients with chronic rheumatological diseases.
3.Outpatient education, counselling on rheumatologic diseases and treatments.
4.Laboratory evaluation of rheumatological conditions.
5.Intra-articular injections: The rheumatology department provides joint injection (Intra-articular injection) and soft tissue injection. This usually involves injecting a corticosteroid. This is a cheap and effective technique and useful for inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions.
6.Intra lesional injections: plantar fascia, trigger finger, carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis.
7.Diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: diagnostic and therapeutic synovial aspiration, tissue biopsy (minor salivary gland, skin, renal, muscle and nerve).
8. Biologic therapy
Management of collagen vascular diseases and various arthritis
Management of vasculitides, soft tissue rheumatism (aches, myalgias, backaches), PUOs, connective tissue diseases, anti-phospholipids antibody syndrome
The conditions that we treat and evaluate for include:
Pain – such as back and neck pain (Spondylitis), shoulder pain, knee pain, hip pain.
Soft tissue rheumatism, overuse syndroms: carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis.
Autoimmune connective tissue diseases various form of vasculitis (Takayasu’s, Giant cell arteritis, Kawasaki, ANCA vasculitis (Granulomatous polyangitis, Chrug-Strauss, polyangitis nodosa )cryglobinemic vasculitis, hypocomplementemic vasculitis,Henoch Schonlein purpura, IgA related vasulopathy) and other vasculitic mimics.
Myositis: Polymyositis, dermatomyositis.
Myalgias (muscle pains).
Crystal arthropathies: Gout and Pseudogout, calcium pyrophosphate diseases.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).
Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis).
